Strategic PlanRaton, New Mexico
The City of Raton hired Better City in January 2019 to assist in conducting economic development initiatives, which included reviewing past project recommendations, conducting an economic assessment of the City, and providing strategic project recommendations for further development. Better City’s efforts were specifically targeted toward strategy defined through implementation and was later adjusted to include the creation of this economic development strategic plan.
Some of Better City’s findings were the County’s significant overall populations loss with the increase in retired-age residents in the community. Additionally, the industry of Raton was assessed and the highest paying industry is reportedly lowest ranking reported industry in total payroll. Findings like these supported recommendations given to Raton and gave the City a focus point.
The key strategic recommendations included in the plan were workforce development, entrepreneurial infrastructure, outdoor recreation, downtown revitalization, business retention and expansion and sustainable economic development.
